Students: Why your web presence is important

As a college journalism professor, I have spent the past several years harping to students on the importance of putting a professional face forward through everything internet: Social media, web pages, blogging, even text messages and email. However, students frequently fail to understand or simply reject outright my warnings, probably because they haven't yet experienced firsthand rejection or success as a direct result of these media.

I present to you Exhibit A: Erin Guzman, who graduated this May and is off to graduate school. She needed a job. She found one. Not because of the professional portfolio she had compiled as student, but instead from her online presence. Take note of her Facebook status update, which she graciously gave me permission to share:

Hey everyone.
I'm happy to announce that I've accepted a pretty sweet gig at the Vanderbilt Student Communications organization in Nashville, TN (courtesy of Brian's connections) as a designer for ads/publications. I just got out of my "try out" for the job, and my supervisor said something to me that I wanted to pass along to the rest of you.
I know that there are some students who think blogging/social media are far removed from what they want to do for their career. But my supervisor told me that the main reason he wanted to hire me was not because of my portfolio (which was a representation of the work I was seeking to do and the work they needed done), but because of my... wait for it... BLOG. He said the number one thing that sold me to him/the organization was my outside work and interests unrelated to my experience.
That being said, and I don't know how much one can say this, putting forth a good representation of yourself [online or anywhere] is crucial. It's probably THE most important thing you can do for yourself. Experience is a great thing, but sometimes it's the other stuff you do that can be the tipping point between you and another candidate. People aren't just "buying" your skills, they're also investing in you, and they want to know you can make a good impact on their company and you're a good personality to have around. This is also dependent on the job in question, but when there are many qualified candidates, the line gets drawn in other places...
So, returning students, be thinking about that as you're looking for jobs/internships in the semesters to come.
Just wanted to share that bit. --Hope everyone is having a good summer!

That just about sums it up, don't you think?

Student Press Law Center Internship

The Student Press Law Center is now recruiting for the Fall 2012 internship term.

SPLC journalism interns work full-time in its D.C.-area office reporting breaking news for the splc.org website and longer-term features for SPLC Report magazine. We welcome those with an interest in multimedia, as we are always looking for ways to liven up the website with visuals. Recent alumni of the SPLC intern program have full-time jobs at The Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, Bloomberg News, POLITICO and many other first-rate media outlets. and the internship is especially valuable to anyone who may be considering law school.

For the first time, we are adding this year a "social media" internship for a person whose interests may include the "outreach" side of working in a nonprofit. Responsibilities will include building and managing a presence for the SPLC across multiple social media platforms and otherwise assisting with organization-building and outreach duties.

We do pay a $3,500-per-semester stipend, which (while not as much as we'd like) is at least enough to cover housing expenses in the D.C. area. We would also consider a part-time internship for a D.C.-area college student who can work around college coursework.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but the sooner the better -- details about how to apply are here on the SPLC website:

Many thanks,

Frank D. LoMonte, Esq.

The cover letter will make you ... or kill you

My friend Tim Stephens serves as the executive sports editor (or some version of that title) for the Orlando Sentinel and the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida. Here's a bit of advice from him regarding the cover letters he expects to see rolling in:
I could write a lot about that, but I think Tim says it succinctly and directly enough.

If you want a job, do your research. And be accurate.

Two positions: Social Media Maven and Market Researcher

A new joint venture is forming to create a kids' brand for unique videogames and virtual toys. We are seeking savvy, highly-motivated people to join our team of experienced game developers in building the kind of brand that has the same recognition as Dr. Seuss. Please note, along with the rest of the team, you will be working on a profit share basis.

We want to start by building experimental microgames for iOS devices. The overall concept is art + poetry + silly + kids. Watch this video and imagine - not literally but conceptually - each one of those experiments as a very small whimsical toy-like app: http://vimeo.com/19995976

Like the experiments in finding interesting sounds above, the goal here is to experiment on a small scale to develop an understanding of what makes videogames more meaningful, while still engaging kids.

There are two roles we need help with, which could potentially be accomplished by one rock star:

Social Media Maven
Our social media will be some combination of a blog development diary with writing and quality photos, DIY crafting posts (e.g. building your own toy xylophone with cardboard tubes), and sharing interesting links & stories. The ideal candidate will be passionate about indie games, a good writer, and have an eye for photography.

Market Researcher & Press Friend-Maker
We need to find out who would buy these and how to reach them. And then we need to make friends with the press to reach them. We have a couple assumptions, but they need to be tested. The ideal candidate will be passionate about indie games, a savvy researcher, and someone who really enjoys making friends.

Exceptional students seeking an internship are welcome to apply, but you should understand that this will be both more challenging and more rewarding than your typical internship.

To apply or for more information, email torncanvas@gmail.com.
