Newspapers of Iowa County – publishers of the Pioneer-Republican of Iowa County, Marengo;
and Williamsburg Journal Tribune – is looking for a summer intern. We are looking for the right candidate who can assist the editorial staff with covering meetings, writing features, taking pictures, some layout and helping out wherever else needed.

The ideal candidate is from Iowa, in college (at least finishing his/her sophomore year) and working toward a degree in journalism, mass communications or a related field; and is looking for that first big step into the world of mass media. The position would be about 20 hours per week, but we are willing to work with the ideal candidate’s schedule depending on his/her needs.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Someone who can cover a meeting at least once or twice a month, and write two or three features per month. Some stories will be assigned, but the best candidates will be able to offer ideas of their own. You may also be asked to assist with breaking news as needed.
  • Photography skills are highly desired, as we’ll have you take photos at some of our many summer festivals in our coverage area along with the Iowa County Fair.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign Version CS3 or a similar pagination program is a plus but not required.

Iowa League of Cities Videography Internship


Iowa League of Cities All-Star Community Award Internship
Application Deadline March 15, 2012


The following outlines the role, responsibilities and expectations for the League’s All-Star Community Award internship:

  • Perform and complete videography services in connection with the League’s All-Star Community Awards project.
  • Project begins around May 1 and will need to be completed by August 15.
  • Project consists of the preparation of four to five videos, totaling about 18 minutes in length.
  • Each video will include audio and visual elements.
  • Accompany the League’s communications coordinator on trips to the winning cities. The communications coordinator will conduct all interviews with winning cities and will handle all correspondence with winning cities. 
  • Provide the equipment to record the video and audio of all interviews and information for the videos, and will use his/her own time and equipment to complete the videos. 
  • Work with the League’s communications coordinator to complete the process in a timely and mutually agreed upon fashion. 
  • Final videos produced will be the property of the League and of the intern, with both parties having the right to use the final product as they see fit without the consent of the other party.
  • Provide the League with multiple copies of the videos and raw footage on DVDs. An electronic copy of the video, which can be posted online, will also need to be provided.
  • Should have a valid driver’s license. Although he/she probably won’t be driving a League vehicle, this is a precaution in case of emergency.

Compensation:

  • Total payment is $1,800. Late penalties and on-time incentives could affect the amount of the final compensation amount. The first $900 will be paid after filming is complete, and the final payment will be made upon satisfactory completion and delivery of the videos. 

Draft Timeline of Project

  • Intern application deadline: 3/15
  • Intern selected: on or around 4/1
  • Winning cities chosen: April
  • Cities notified: April
  • All-Star Site Visit Dates Set: 5/4
  • Site Visits/Filming Complete: ideally 6/30 (1st payment issued)

Community Outreach Internship


DESCRIPTION
The Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, in Des Moines, is seeking an intern for the Spring of 2012 to assist with the activities of the Women of Color Advisory Network (WOCAN), a statewide network of women from various professional backgrounds working to bring awareness to the specific needs to survivors of sexual assault who are persons of color.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • Event Planning - WOCAN’s Monthly Communities of Color Organizing Workshops (MCOCOW) 
  • Communications - Using social media and online marketing strategies to promote WOCAN and expand our web presence.
  • Outreach – Assist with partnership building with community organizations. Foster awareness of WOCAN’s programs in the community, maintain mail and email contact with partner organizations, research new outreach prospects, represent WOCAN at community events. 
  • Coordinate the development of an IowaCASA youth council. 
  • Development –Identify potential sources of funding to support WOCAN’s work and research trends in the anti-violence movement as it relates to communities of color to strengthen WOCAN’s ability to provide technical assistance to IowaCASA membership. 
  • Create, proofread, update and provide input on promotional and educational materials. 

IowaCASA is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to unite people and organizations to promote a society free from sexual violence and to meet the diverse needs of survivors of sexual assault. IowaCASA has 28 member sexual assault crisis centers serving survivors of sexual assault throughout Iowa. Coalition staff work on several initiatives including: technical assistance and training to member centers; civil legal assistance for survivors of sexual assault, including immigration assistance; improving responses to sexual assault within communities of color; a national project providing peer-based assistance to other sexual assault coalitions; statewide sexual assault prevention; training for allied professionals; and public policy efforts at the state and national level. Position Summary:
Under immediate supervision, assist in the market research for the FullCount Software product. Participate in evaluating the existing market and assist with developing and implementing strategies for finding new markets and new customers for the existing software product.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions:
  • Develop and implement search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.
  • Talk to potential clients over the phone regarding their software needs.
  • Become familiar with software product in order to be able to prepare a potential customer to view a demonstration.
  • Make outbound sales calls.
  • Assist sales manager with tradeshow preparation.
  • Become familiar with sales pipeline and follow prospective clients through the pipeline.
  • Learn and understand the FullCount product in order to facilitate evaluating potential markets.

  • Maintain basic knowledge of the company products and services in order to effectively communicate how FullCount may add value to new and existing customers within our key markets.
