Communications Internship -- Washington, D.C.

Job title: Communications Intern

Job description: The Alliance for Securing Democracy is seeking a communications intern to assist with the ASD’s public outreach efforts. The intern will support the head of external affairs and communications assistant in implementing ASD’s communications strategy by drafting materials for the media, creating social media content, and identifying new outreach opportunities.

Interns will benefit from exposure to GMF’s network and will gain valuable press outreach and social media experience. During COVID-19, all internships will be on a remote, work-from-home basis.

Internships are paid through a $500/month stipend and offer an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in political communications.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Compiling daily news round-up emails for internal consumption.
  • Drafting materials for members of the press.
  • Creating content for social media.
  • Working with the communications assistant to grow ASD’s social media presence on Twitter and Facebook.
  • Helping expand a database of press contacts.
  • Copyediting blog posts and reports as needed.
  • Producing summaries of hearings and events relevant to ASD’s work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job qualifications: 

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong interest in authoritarian efforts to undermine democracy, national security, disinformation, and U.S.-Russia/China relations.
  • Fluency in English is required.  
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working independently.
  • Incoming senior, graduate student, or recent graduate pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, international relations, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a media outlet, public relations firm, think tank, NGO, government body, or similar organization an asset.
  • Graphic design skills preferred.

Company description: The Alliance for Securing Democracy (ASD), a nonpartisan initiative housed at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, develops comprehensive strategies to deter, defend against, and raise the costs on autocratic efforts to undermine and interfere in democratic institutions. ASD has staff in Washington, D.C., and Brussels, bringing together experts on disinformation, malign finance, emerging technologies, elections integrity, economic coercion, and cybersecurity, as well as Russia, China, and the Middle East, to collaborate across traditional stovepipes and develop cross-cutting frameworks.

  

Location: ASD is based in Washington, D.C., but all internships will be on a remote, work-from-home basis during the coronavirus pandemic. Work hours are 9-5 EST.

Media Sales job

Responsibilities include: 

  • Contacting prospective customers to sell radio time for broadcasting stations. 
  • Maintaining account lists and soliciting new business. 
  • Develop proposals utilizing MS office products and other software. 
  • Prepare promotional plans, sales literature, and advertising proposals. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients by providing top quality service. 
  • Investigate and resolve customer problems. 
  • Communicate with other departments to assure quality service in placing orders and arranging promotional events. 
  • Responsible for exceeding sales budget and collection of sold accounts. 
  • Attend sales meetings, training sessions, and client remotes.

They must be self-motivated, goal-driven and creative, with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.   • Experience in sales/marketing is helpful, (including selling Girl Scout cookies or Boy Scout popcorn) but will train the right person. 
  • Basic knowledge of MS office products, i.e., MS Word and Windows environment 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle with appropriate insurance
