FleishmanHillard internship, St. Louis


While at FleishmanHillard, interns have the opportunity to work with counselors to develop and execute traditional and digital media campaigns; write news releases, research papers, pitch letters and other correspondence; participate in new business opportunities; and coordinate events.

Applicants need at least a 3.2 GPA average and must have completed their junior year of undergraduate study, however, recent graduates are preferred. Applications are welcomed from students with concentrations in all major areas, but backgrounds in journalism, mass media, communications, public relations, and radio and television broadcasting are given first consideration. Experience in digital communications and/or media convergence is required.

If someone wishes to apply for the fall session, the following is what they will need to send to complete the applicant materials, which we would appreciate receiving by the July 1 deadline:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter expressing interest in the internship program
  • Writing samples (three if possible): Examples would be something written for a classroom assignment (press release, pitch letter, media kit), a campus newspaper or magazine article, or an essay, letter, or memo of some sort
  • Letter of recommendation from a former teacher, employer, or personal reference (teacher or employer are preferred)
  • Transcript (can be unofficial)

Communications, Graphic Design and Copy Editor Internships, @START_UMD

Communications and Research Support Internships
The National Consortium  for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism
College Park, MD


The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland is seeking interns for various communications and research transition support roles. These positions are unpaid, but students are encouraged to seek credit. Interns in these positions will be encouraged to use their assignments with START to help them build professional portfolios.

Communications

START communications interns will report to the director of communications. Responsibilities will include:

  • Writing and editing press releases
  • Writing and publishing feature stories
  • Planning and attending events
  • Creating media kits
  • Developing and tracking media lists
  • Monitoring social media
  • Assisting with strategic planning and implementation
  • Engaging in START’s educational enrichment program

Qualifications:

  • Graduate student or junior or senior majoring in journalism, communication or a related field.
  • Interest in media relations, strategic planning and public relations
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (required), Adobe Creative Suite

Application Instructions:
Applicants must provide a resume, cover letter and three samples. At least one of those samples should be a piece you authored. The other two may be pieces (articles, brochures, etc.) you have authored or edited.

Graphic Design

The START graphic design intern will be part of the communications internship team and will report to the director of communications. Responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing report templates
  • Designing and publishing brochures and marketing materials
  • Creating flyers and programs for events
  • Creating graphic images to accompany news stories
  • Some web design
  • Creating media kits
  • Assisting with strategic planning and implementation
  • Engaging in START’s educational enrichment program

Qualifications:

  • Graduate student, junior or senior majoring in art, journalism, communication, visual communication or a related field
  • Interest in design, branding and marketing
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience in graphic design, with an excellent portfolio of work (class projects are acceptable as portfolio submissions)
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite (required), Adobe Creative Suite (required)

Application Instructions:
Applicants must provide a resume, cover letter and three samples of your graphic design work. Class projects are permitted.

Copy Editor

START Copy Editor interns will report to the director of communications and the assistant director for research.

Responsibilities:

  • Copy editing research reports to be submitted to funders and for publication
  • Copy editing grant and contract proposals
  • Ensuring and enforcing a consistent style (Chicago Manual of Style) across all academic and research reports
  • Assist in developing a style guide for the organization that includes topics such as citations, foot/end notes, table of contents, etc.
  • Copy editing other materials, such as press releases, web content, brochures, etc

Qualifications:

  • Graduate student in English, Communications, Journalism or related field. Superior undergraduates with faculty recommendations will also be considered.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Chicago Manual of Style
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines while handling several tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
